Background Note

Isaac Carasso (Isaac) who lived in Barcelona in the 1910s found that many Spanish children were infected with intestinal parasites. Isaac, who was aware of Nobel laureate and Pasteur Institute director Ilya Mechnikov’s research on lactic ferments, came up with a yogurt based product known for its health advantages. He launched the product under the Danone brand, named after his son Daniel Carasso (Daniel), in 1919. In 1929, Isaac moved the company from Spain to France, opening a manufacturing plant in Paris. Daniel later joined the family business and established Société Parisienne du yoghourt Danone in France. In 1942, Daniel moved the company to the Bronx, New York and partnered with Joe Metzger (Metzger). The company was renamed Dannon Milk Company to sound more American..
